Color Radiance

Color Radiance™ is based on the concepts of the Old Masters of  Renaissance and Baroque eras of using rich color infused with shimmering light.  Linda Coulter developed a "beginner-easy" approach, using today's painting supplies, to teach Color Radiance™ to beginners and intermediate painters.

The Old Masters had only a small handful of hand made pigments to choose from.  They chose wisely when, where, and how to use each precious pigment to create the various effects they desired.   They pushed each pigment to its fullest extent in order to broaden their capabilities and creative possibilities.  This concept alone is a fascinating study for a painter of any skill level.

Because the Old Masters of early Renaissance had been glass painters and craftsmen of illuminated manuscripts, they understood the concepts of painting with sunlight.

Their prime goals of the multi-layering art styles were to capture realism, natural effects of radiant sunlight, warm shadows, hazy atmosphere, 3-dimensional form, drama, visual impact, and various special illusions that cannot be accomplished using 'au premiere coup' or 'alla prima' (wet into wet) method.

The classical painting theories explained above were  abandoned with the advent of factory-made oil-rich paints and the new wave of "impressionism" that swept across Europe in the 1800s.  Wet-into-wet techniques  dominated the fine art world and the classical  multi-layering art styles and techniques of the Old Masters fell by the wayside and were replaced by the modern "quick fix" of alla prima or au premiere coup.

After many years of teaching classical Old Master methods, Linda developed the trademarked Coulter Grisaille™ art style with Color Radiance™ techniques that brings the greatest ease of multi-layered art works  to the beginner and intermediate painter's easels. Each layer of Coulter Grisaille™ isolates the painter's focus and goals, essentially breaking down the painting process into bite-sized steps that are easy to manage and fun to learn.

One of the hallmarks of Coulter Grisaille™ is how easily mistakes can be corrected at any point in the painting process.  Many mistakes can be fixed with just one brush stroke!

These cherished techniques and concepts are presented in simple terms, easy to understand, and a joy to learn at any skill level.

For a truly fascinating journey through fine art, Linda Coulter has chosen wonderfully romantic subjects to paint this year as she illustrates the concepts of Color Radiance that bring Little Secrets of the Old Masters to the beginner's easel.
