Hand Crafted Bentwood Boxes from Maine
The Pop ShopWelcome to the wonderful world of bentwood boxes! These 100% wood bentwood boxes are handcrafted in Maine by Norman Guillemette. Wooden boxes of American origin date from early colonial times. The earliest containers all made by hand by local craftsmen (as Norman is doing) that varied widely in shapes, sizes and methods of construction.
Before the invention of glass jars, they were used to hold the spices, herbs, dry meals and assorted items used in the preparation of food in the pantry ... thus the name "pantry box" was derived. They were arranged in size from the
miniature pill and spice boxes to the larger receptacles for butter and cheese.
None are more well known or refined in construction than those made by the Shakers. They were oval and graduated in size and hald together with carefully fingered laps. These industrious people perfected the market by offering all types of boxes for every possible purpose. Nests of both oval and round boxes as well as open carriers with handles were available in every size. Today these originals are scarce and costly to purchase.
Time has in no way diminished the desirability or usefulness of the wooden container. They are still a favorite possession of the modern world. Therefore, we have recreated the wooden box in the best quality and craftsmanship that we can offer. Norman Guillemette
